Webcam showing a black screen?

By Device Test Center · Updated

A black preview does not automatically mean the camera is broken. A closed shutter, a different selected camera, denied permission or an unavailable device can all prevent the picture you expect. Check these in order, without disabling your computer’s security protections.

1. Check the shutter and selected camera

  1. Open any physical privacy shutter and inspect the laptop’s camera-disable switch or documented camera key.
  2. For an external webcam, check the cable and try a direct USB connection.
  3. Open the Webcam Test, press Start and select the intended camera when the list is available.
  4. Face a reasonably lit area and move briefly to distinguish a live dark image from a frozen frame.

2. Check both permission layers

The browser must allow this website, and the operating system must allow the browser to use the camera. In Chrome, review Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera, including which camera is selected.

On Windows 11, inspect Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and the desktop-app access setting. On a Mac, review System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Reopen the browser if the system requests it. If access is managed by an organization, contact its administrator.

3. Release the camera and compare another app

  1. Stop the test and close other tabs or applications using the camera, then retry.
  2. If the browser still has no image, stop it and open a trusted local camera app.
  3. Compare the same camera under the same lighting. Change only one setting or connection between attempts.

A working local camera app narrows the investigation toward browser selection or permission; it does not guarantee every video-call app is configured correctly. A failure across apps suggests a wider device or system issue worth taking to the manufacturer.

4. Interpret resolution and FPS carefully

A visible picture confirms that the page received video frames. The displayed resolution belongs to the negotiated stream and may be below the camera’s advertised maximum. Improve front lighting before evaluating image quality.

FPS is shown only when the browser exposes the needed video-frame information. An unavailable FPS reading is not a zero-FPS camera diagnosis. This test neither records nor uploads the picture. Press Stop and confirm the preview closes when you finish.

Common questions

The camera light is on but the image is black. What next?

Check the shutter, camera selection and lighting, then compare a local camera app after stopping the browser test. The light alone cannot confirm that useful frames reach the page.

Should I disable antivirus or reinstall drivers first?

Start with the shutter, connection, selection and permissions. Use the manufacturer or operating system’s official troubleshooting for further steps instead of disabling protections or installing unofficial driver tools.
