How to use the scroll wheel

  1. Place the pointer over the scroll test area.
  2. Scroll slowly upward, then downward, and check the corresponding counters.
  3. Repeat with consistent movements if you suspect skipped or reversed scrolling. Reset before comparing devices.

Understanding your results

The counters measure browser wheel events, not physical notches. One wheel notch may produce more than one event, and smooth or inertial scrolling can continue producing events after the initial movement.

The visual indicator shows the direction of vertical scrolling. Trackpads and free-spinning wheels may generate very different event counts. Compare direction and consistency rather than expecting one event per notch.

Troubleshooting your scroll wheel

Scrolling briefly reverses direction

Scroll slowly in one direction and repeat. Compare another application to separate page behavior from a wheel or software issue. Check smooth-scrolling and natural-scrolling settings.

One notch produces several events

Events do not equal wheel notches. Inertia, smooth scrolling and trackpads can produce multiple events. Use direction and consistency as the main observations.
