The counters measure browser wheel events, not physical notches. One wheel notch may produce more than one event, and smooth or inertial scrolling can continue producing events after the initial movement.
The visual indicator shows the direction of vertical scrolling. Trackpads and free-spinning wheels may generate very different event counts. Compare direction and consistency rather than expecting one event per notch.
Browsers and operating systems can split or combine scrolling input. Smooth scrolling and inertia also change the number of events delivered.
Yes, trackpad scrolling often generates wheel events. Use the touchpad test if you also want movement and click feedback.
